Following is a summary of highlights gathered from their responses: Alcohol and Other Drug Use Figure 1 compares Arizona student alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use during the current school year with college students use nationwide. National data was taken from the Core 2002 survey (Core Alcohol and Other Drug Survey. Carbondale, Ill: The Core Institute: 2002). EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Less than 5% of Arizona students reported using any of the other illegal substances listed on the survey, as compared to 9% or less of college students nationwide. College students in Arizona use less alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs than college students nationwide. In the past year, Arizona students reported the following changes in their alcohol use: 22% indicated they had quit or decreased their use. 16.5% indicated they had increased their use. More freshmen reported increased use (26.9%) than decreased/quit use (14.6%). Students under 21 years of age reported higher rates of increased alcohol use (20.3%) than students 21 and older (12.7%). During their most recent drinking occasion: The average reported drinking rate was 3.09 drinks over 2.33 hours (1.45 drinks/hour) with an average blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .068%. Students under 21 years of age reported higher levels of alcohol consumption at their last occasion (3.2 drinks over 2.15 hours [1.67 drinks/hour] BAC .085%) than students 21 and older (2.99 drinks over 2.53 hours [1.25 drinks/hour] BAC .051%). Freshmen had significantly higher levels of consumption and BAC rates than any other class 2 drinks/hr compared to 1.5/hr for sophomores and 1/hr for juniors and senior; BAC .097% compared to .077% for sophomores, .060% for juniors and .052% for seniors. Arizonas heaviest and highest-risk alcohol use trends are concentrated among our youngest college students freshmen and students under the age of 21. Students perceptions of peer alcohol use were largely inaccurate. Overall, students consumed an average of 3.09 drinks the last time they drank. Their perception, however, was that students were drinking substantially more than this (see Figure 2). EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s The most commonly reported circumstances in which students drink alcohol include: Off-campus private parties that are small and the student knows most of the people there (87.5%); this is also where students reported the highest levels of alcohol use 45.8% typically having 4 or more drinks. Hanging out with friends (77.5%). Off-campus house parties that are large and the student knows very few people there (73.4%). In a bar or restaurant (62.8%); 32.4% of students under the age of 21 reported drinking in this circumstance. 29.7% of students report having used a fake ID to purchase alcohol. Consequences of Alcohol Use Students were asked to indicate any negative consequences they experienced during the school year due to drinking. Students were given the following items from which to select physically injuring self, physically injuring another person, experiencing sexual assault, getting in trouble with authorities, experiencing academic problems, involvement in a fight, driving under the influence, and having unprotected sex (without a condom). Following is an abbreviated summary of their responses: 36% of students indicated experiencing at least one negative consequence during the school year. Driving under the influence ranked highest (19.1%), followed by having unprotected sex (14%) and physically injuring self (12.2%). More male students (39.7%) experienced negative consequences due to drinking than female students (33.8%). Students under the age of 21 (37.3%) experienced more negative consequences due to drinking than students 21 or older (34.7%). The one exception was driving under the influence with more students 21 and older reporting that consequence (21.3%) than students under 21 (16.7%). Freshmen (40.3%) reported more negative consequences due to drinking than sophomores (34.9%), juniors (35.2%) or seniors (35.9%). Over one-third of college students report experiencing negative consequences as a result of drinking alcohol. Freshmen are more likely than their older classmates to experience such consequences. Protective Behaviors Students were asked to indicate any behaviors they use to protect themselves when they drink. Following are the highlights of their responses: When asked what they do to protect their drinks at a party, club or bar, the majority of students answered affirmatively to all five options listed Never leave drinks unattended (89%) Always drink from bottles/cans I opened (87.1%) Avoid group drinks like punch bowls/beer bongs, etc (81.6%) Watch as drinks are prepared (79.7%) Not accept drinks from anyone (75.8%) Out of 12 protective behaviors listed, the majority of students answered affirmatively to 8 Having a designated driver (90.8%) Refusing to ride with a driver who has been drinking (87.3%) Watching a friends drink while he/she is away (86.1%) Eating before and during drinking (84%) Keeping track of the number of drinks consumed (78.1%) Stopping drinking 1 to 2 hours before going home (64.8%) Hanging out with friends who drink less, or more slowly (53.8%) WOMEN: pacing to one or fewer drinks per hour (51%) The remaining protective behaviors that did not receive a majority endorsement included Avoiding drinking games (46.6%) Determining, in advance, not to exceed a set number of drinks (45.8%) MEN: pacing to two or fewer drinks per hour (44.9%) Alternating alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages (44.3%) Overall, female students reported higher use of protective behaviors than male students. Students under the age of 21 were less likely to report use of the most effective protective behaviors (i.e., alternating with non-alcoholic beverages, pacing, determining not to exceed a certain drink limit, avoiding drinking games) than students 21 and older. College students under the age of 21 are less likely to use protective behaviors when drinking alcohol than students aged 21 and over. Attitudes About AOD Issues Students were asked to indicate their opinion on a variety of alcohol and other drug (AOD)-related issues. Following is a summary of their responses. Figures 3, 4 and 5 portray students levels of awareness and support for various AOD policies and laws: Most college students in Arizona are informed of policies, ordinances and laws regulating alcohol and other drug use. Very few students oppose these regulations. Figure 3. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Figure 4. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Figure 5. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s 81.4% of students believe one should not drink to an intoxicating level that interferes with academic work or other responsibilities. 12.6% believe that drinking alcohol is never a good thing to do. 73.8% of students feel that alcoholic beverages should be available at Homecoming or other campus celebration events, but only accessible to those of legal drinking age. 21% of students feel that alcoholic beverages should not be available at such events. I Conclusion From a comprehensive viewpoint, findings from the 2004 Arizona Institutions of Higher Education (AZIHE) Network statewide online survey reveal encouraging results. In general, students enrolled at Arizonas three public universities are reporting lower rates of alcohol and other drug use than college students nationwide. Most Arizona students reported engaging in some type of protective behavior when consuming alcohol, and relatively few reported experiencing negative consequences as a result of their drinking. Additionally, the majority of students indicated they are aware of policies and laws that govern alcohol consumption on their campuses and in the state of Arizona, and very few oppose them. At closer inspection however, the results portray a troubling phenomenon of high-risk use among Arizonas youngest university students. Freshmen reported the highest levels and the greatest increases of alcohol consumption than any other class. In terms of risk, freshmen have the highest blood alcohol concentration levels and are experiencing the greatest number of negative consequences as a result of their drinking. Overall, freshmen and students under the age of 21 are demonstrating heavier and higher risk alcohol use than their peers who are age 21 or over. Consequently, freshmen and students under the age of 21 are also significantly more likely to overestimate the level of alcohol consumption among students on their campuses. The Arizona Institutions of Higher Education (AZIHE) Network is a partnership of substance abuse prevention and intervention professionals and campus administrators from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and The University of Arizona. Members are committed to reducing and preventing heavy and high-risk alcohol use among students enrolled on their campuses. Utilizing proven strategies such as social normative campaigns, diversion programming, and environmental management approaches, Arizonas universities have achieved significant gains improving the health and safety of students. Nevertheless, the results of this survey reveal the need for further prevention efforts especially those targeted at our states youngest population of university students. Through the knowledge this study has created about Arizonas university population, The AZIHE Network hopes to continue and increase its work with campus stakeholders, community leaders and institutional and statewide administrators to enhance the safety and health of Arizonas students. APPENDIX A. In February 2004, email messages were sent to 18,000 randomly selected students enrolled at Arizonas three public institutions of higher education inviting them to participate in this study. All students who attend Arizonas public universities are assigned university-specific email addresses. However, many students opt not to use them, favoring their own commercial email accounts instead. It was hypothesized that approximately 50% of the 18,000 randomly selected undergraduate students would actually use the university email account assigned to them, and thus read the emailed study invitation; and of those, approximately 50% (4,500) would choose to participate by submitting a completed survey. As anticipated, the final study sample totaled 4,426 undergraduate students. Table 1 provides a comparison between Arizonas public university demographics and the survey respondents: Table 1.Survey RespondentsAZIHE Student EnrollmentGender Male Female 36.3% 63.7% 46.6% 53.4%Classification Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior 24.3% 20.1% 26.0% 29.5% 24.1% 21.0% 24.3% 30.7%Ethnic Origin African American Asian/Pacific Islander Caucasian Hispanic/Latino Native American 1.7% 6.2% 77.7% 10.8% 3.5% 3.3% 5.1% 74.6% 14.1% 2.9% Working closely with a variety of campus, local community, city and state stakeholders, the collective goal of the Arizona Institutions of Higher Education (AZIHE) Network is to: Assist Arizona colleges and universities in creating healthy campus environments, reducing prevalence of heavy and high-risk student alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and related negative consequences, and ultimately increasing student retention and success; and, Encourage activities that bring colleges and communities together, working in partnership to reduce negative consequences related to heavy and high-risk AOD use for the individual, the campus and the community. Funding for this survey was obtained through a grant from the Pacific Coast College Health Association and from regional funds from The Network: Addressing Collegiate Alcohol and Other Drug Issues. This survey was conducted with permission from the Institutional Review Boards at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and The University of Arizona. Calculations based on # of drinks, # of hours drinking, gender and weight of the individual drinker. Arizonas legal driving limits are .08% BAC for drivers 21 and over, .00% BAC for drivers under the age of 21. (footnote continued) PAGE 2 PAGE 3 . . . . . . . . .
